Uncovering coupling directions in climate systems


This proposal presents a unifying approach for analyzing the structural properties of time series by complex network approaches, with much emphasis on studying experimental observational data obtained from climatology. Since most of complex network approaches proposed so far in the literature have tested mainly with idealized data from models, in this project, we will generalize our complex network approach, making them more suitable for studying observational records. Specifically, we will investigate the inter- action patterns between climate variabilities, which are from two geographically distant regions. We will illustrate what kind of information can be obtained from complex network analysis, hence highlighting the potentials of this rather new type of tool for climate studies. The second topic of this project is to study explosive transitions to synchronization in Kuramoto models. (AU)
