Abstract

In this project, we intend to study the synthesis of III-V semiconductor nanowires, with the general goal of developing sensing devices for biosystems. In particular, we intend to explore InP planar nanowires for applications in biosensors and (In)GaP nanowires with emission in the visible spectral range for optical detection applications. In the first case, we aim at developing mechanisms to control the spatial orientation of the nanowires on the substrate by surface treatment. With this methodology, we plan to increase the fabrication yield of nanowire-based biosensors in our group. Furthermore, we can contribute to the current discussion in literature about growth mechanisms of planar semiconductor nanowires, catalyzed by metallic particles, in the vapor-liquid-solid model. Regarding the (In)GaP nanowires, we intend to exploit the transition between the dominant crystallographic phases (cubic and hexagonal) and the insertion of quantum dots in nanowire arrays, in order to obtain efficient luminescence in the visible spectral region. The results expected with this project will expand the available tools for biosystem studies, currently carried out at the Nano and Biosystems Laboratories, particularly on bacterial adhesion mechanisms.
