Remote Sensing techniques are becoming more popular as a way of studying and monitoring inland water bodies. However, such a technology is still underused in Brazil, due to a lack of bio-optical characterization as well as the little evaluation of remote sensing algorithms to retrieve optical active components. As a way to fill this gap, the Laboratório de Instrumentação para Sistemas Aquáticos (LabISA) (Aquatic Systems Instrumentation Laboratory), with support of FAPESP, CNPq and ANEEL, that beheld the acquisition of several equipment for in situ and laboratory bio-optical characterization. Since then, field campaigns have been performed aiming a comprehensive dataset for future application for remote sensing algorithms. However, to ensure acquisition and data processing quality, careful analysis has to be done, especially for inland water bodies which lacks of methodological consensus. For that, the "Workshop for developing and implementing bio-optical/semi-analytical models for monitoring aquatic ecosystems by earth observation satellites", aims to bring to Brazil, Emmanuel Boss, a renowned researcher in the field, aiming to evaluate the acquired dataset as well as encourage the discussion for methodological challenges regarding remote sensing applications. Dr Boss has an extensive experience on the use of hydrological optics equipment been a pioneer in equipment developing as well as measuring optical properties in different aquatic systems. His studies cover empirical and theoretical aspects have already published more than 100 peer reviewed papers. The presence of Dr. Boss will also aim gather Brazilian researchers in hydrological optics, mainly from São Paulo state. Meetings will be set to gather researchers and phd students with Dr. Boss which will also allow future scientific partnerships. (AU)
