Fluoroindate and tellurite glasses doped with rare earth ions and metallic nanoparticles for enhanced solar cell efficiency by sunlight down-shifting and upconversion

Abstract

There is an increased exertion by the scientific community to minimize the material cost for solar cell, to enhance the solar cell efficiency and to produce inventive and proficient new products for photovoltaic technology applications. The conversion efficiency limit for the solar cell is estimated to be around 29% which could be enhanced up to 37 % as shown by detailed balance calculations by spectrum modification of sunlight radiation. Since the radiations having wavelength above 1100 nm have a portion of more than 20% of the solar spectrum, it should be noted that nearly half of the total sun irradiance consist of ultraviolet and infrared light. Hence, there is room for enhancing the efficiency of the solar cell by utilizing these infrared as well as ultravoilet radiations. The goal of this project is to sudy fluorindate and tellurite glasses doped with rare earth ions and metalic nanoparticles as potential enhancers of solar cell efficiency by simultaneously exploiting surface plasmon resonance, luminescence down-shifting (LDS), up- and down-conversion (UC and DC), and/or their combination to use the ultravoilet and infrared portions of the solar spectrum.
