The rehabilitation treatment with conventional complete dentures aims to restore chewing, phonetics and swallowing, providing aesthetic and comfort. The choice of occlusal scheme, impression procedures, and registration of intermaxillary relations are crucial factors for the success of treatment with complete dentures. Currently, the most widespread occlusal scheme for complete dentures in eccentric positions is the bilateral balanced occlusion (OBB), however, the canines guided occlusion (DC) represents a possible alternative on complete dentures fabrication. More randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effect of occlusal squemes regarding mastication are still needed. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of occlusion guidance and mandibular ridge resorption on masticatory performance and ability, and maximum occlusal force in complete denture wearers with normal and resorbed mandibular ridges, by means of a cross-over study. Fifty Individuals edentulous (G1, n=25, normal mandibular ridges; G2, n=25, resorbed mandibular ridges) will receive prosthetic treatment and after a period of adaptation to the new conventional complete dentures, will be divided into two study sequences where on alternate and sequential periods of 30 days each, will be assigned to two types of proposed protocols: Sequence 1 (bilateral balanced occlusion - OBB, followed by canines guidance - DC), and Sequence 2 (DC followed by OBB). Evaluations of masticatory performance and ability will be conducted by the sieves method and application of specific questionnaire based on visual analog scale (VAS), respectively, and maximum occlusal force will be measured by means of a gnatodynamometer. These evaluations will be carried out in different moments: 30 days after the adaptation period with the new dentures (Evaluation 1), and 60 days after the adaptation period with the new dentures (Evaluation 2). Masticatory performance will be evaluated by the sieves method using almonds, and expressed in percentage. The responses to the masticatory ability inventory will be measured from the VAS, and a mean value will be obatained for each group, expressed in millimeters. Data will be analyzed statistically with a significance level of 5%, by means of the IBM SPSS Statistics, (version 19.0), using appropriate test according to the adherence to normality. (AU)
