Abstract

Physical training imposes structural, functional and molecular changes in the heart, which is an adaptive response called physiological cardiac hypertrophy. An issue that raises strong interest is the specific cardiac adaptive response according training modality. Thus, an increased thickness left ventricular (LV) wall as well as reduced LV cavity it has been shown to occur after anaerobic training, which is known as concentric LV hypertrophy. On the other hand, aerobic training induce eccentric cavity remodeling, which show be expressed by an increase in the cavity radius and maintenance or negligible change of wall thickness. Overall, this information led to assume that the cardiac remodeling induced by exercise is a clear issue. However, some issues have shown an opposite position - there is evidence that different types of aerobic exercise training can trigger a distinct parameter of cardiac remodeling. These data support our study, which will be developed on two experimental models (swimming and running) of aerobic exercise training commonly applied to induce cardiac remodeling in rodents. The use of experimental exercise model is suitable for our interest: [1] cardiac remodeling is similar in rats and humans; [2] load, volume, duration and adherence to training program are easily controlled; [3] an exact hypertrophic pattern in response to different aerobic training protocols is also a hypothesis to be defined at experimental models. In fact, our study will provide the following information: [1] swimming and running training programs induce similar morphologic changes in LV; [2] two protocols can induce improvement in LV performance and myocardial inotropic. Moreover, the molecular mechanisms linked to the adaptive process will not be neglected. We will assess whether the swimming and running training can modulate signaling pathway of PI3Kp110alpha/Akt/mTOR, which is critical to cardiac remodeling induced by exercise. The role of training programs on myocardial microRNA's expression is another target of this study. (AU)
