The aim of this joint research between the UNICAMP and the UCSB is to analyze the interrelation between the dynamics of the rural population, environmental vulnerability and socioeconomic inequalities. More specifically, it will analyze the contribution of social, economic and environmental variables as drivers of the new trends of rural migration in the Brazilian territory, as well as the consequent impacts of this rural exodus on the labor market inequalities in the municipalities of origin and destination. Three main results of these analyses can be highlighted: 1) to elaborate a historically comparable panel of municipalities with social, economic and environmental variables (mainly soil and climate characteristics); 2) to analyze how environmental, social and economic characteristics in the municipalities affect the dynamics of the rural population; 3) to analyze how the rural exodus affect the wage differentials between agricultural and non-agricultural activities in the municipalities of origin and the occupational attainment in the municipalities of destination. Socioeconomic analyses will be based on microdata of the Demographic Census of 1991, 2000 and 2010. Environmental analyses will be based on maps of soil and climate provided by IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística). Finally, the research aims to propose policies of rural development in order to reduce the risks associated with the recent dynamics of the agricultural activity and the gradual reconfiguration of the new rural society. This project will be developed in 2 years and wants to foster a research partnership between the UNICAMP and the UCSB, through joint publications and exchange of researchers and knowledge. (AU)
