The influence of environmental contaminants (cyproterone acetate and nonylphenol) and abiotic factors (temperature and UV radiation) in the internal Melanin in anurans

Abstract

Amphibians and fish have in addition to colorful skin also pigment cells (melanocytes and melanomacrophages) in different organs and membranes, which have melanin. This visceral pigmentation can be related to residual melanin accumulation, may have a role in the immune system, antioxidant functions, and protect the tissue against DNA damage. The objectives of this study are to test the functions of visceral pigmentation related to different physical and chemical factors. Data analysis includes morphological and stereological analyses, quantification of melanin. Specifically, we elaborate three projects to answer the following questions: Visceral melanin in anurans responds to abiotic factors such as temperature and UV radiation (subproject 1)? How is the response of visceral front melanin to water contaminants, endocrine disruptors, such as cyproterone acetate and nonylphenol (subproject 2)? There are changes in liver pigmentation according to seasonal fluctuations (subproject 3)? Our hypothesis is that both the melanocytes as the melanomacrophages will respond to these factors, and so you can infer functions or properties of visceral melanin in anurans. (AU)
