Chemical diversity and biological potential of selected species of São Paulo's flora

The Plant kingdom is responsible for the most part of the registered literature on chemical diversity, represented by natural products with complex structures, and with several biological activities, giving them a commercial interest as medicines, flavorings, fragrances and pesticides that play a relevant role in the worldwide economy. The Brazilian tropical flora may be considered one of the richest and less explored sources of substrates used in the search for new molecular models that may, by chemical and pharmacological studies, lead to the discover of new medicines for the cure or control of different diseases. In this context, within one of the aims of the institutional project "Conservation and sustainable utilization of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest: chemical diversity and investigation of the biological potential of secondary metabolites", our group has been working in the bioprospection of native plants that posses biological activities, among these Conchocarpus fontanesianus (Rutaceae), Avicennia schaueriana (Acanthaceae) and Hedyosmum brasiliense (Chloranthaceae) were selected due to the anticholinesterase, antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activities previously detected. The aim of this project is to increase the knowledge about the chemical diversity from native species, as well as to aggregate a value to these species through the discovery of new active compounds with potential application in the development of new medicines for the activities studied.
