Creation of a high performance network computational storage facility for research groups data.

Abstract

The creation of new research groups involving professors, researchers and students of the faculty of Engineering in Bauru has contributed to the increase of technical and scientific data, which needs to be stored and record in a safe environment for digital data. With the rapid growth in the use of Information and Communication Technology in all areas of knowledge, the traffic in the network of a very large number of files of different formats such as videos, presentations, programs (software), tables and many others. All this digital data, when shared and accessed by many users, generates a large traffic on the computer network. It turns out that there is no problem when this data flow internally in the local network, which we call the LAN (Local Area Network), usually has its connections with bandwidth of high-performance data. The institution researchers have been used large volume of data stored on the Internet in places normally outside the LAN available in computing services CLOUD (Cloud) as is the case with DropBox, SkyDrive, Google Drive and others. This situation puts the institution on an uncomfortable situation considering the confidentiality of the data, which stored in third part companies with no formal relations with the University. As most of the researchers are constantly in the campus itself, it is possible to create a local data storage area, which enables shared access and / or restricted, high performance, and has several levels of security. The software (programs) that control these areas are the same and has the same features as available on the Internet for the computing cloud, with the advantage that the access speed is determined by the LAN to those inside the campus and allows external access to the Internet speed for those outside. Such a facility would bring great comfort to the users of the system while alleviate the load of traffic to the Internet. Today are available in the market various equipment and software that enable the provision of these cloud computing services and we are currently working with the software called owncloud, which is freely available for Linux operating systems, Windows and MAC, beyond the mobile platforms such as Android and iOS.
