Sporogenesis and gametogenesis of Rauvolfia l. species (Apocynaceae) with report of monoecy, dioecy and ginodioecy

Apocynaceae (Gentianales) has at least 415 genera and 4555 species distributed in subtropical and tropical regions of the world. It is currently recognized five subfamilies based on floral traits. The most basal groups are nested in the Rauvolfioideae subfamily that is considered a paraphyletic group in phylogenetic studies. The Rauvolfioideae floral characters have been classified as taxonomically uninformative, but anatomical and reproductive biology studies have demonstrated that these characters can help to understand the evolution of reproductive strategies in Apocynaceae. Although the family is known to have species with bisexual flowers, there are reports of functional dioecy and gynodioecy for Rauvolfioideae species, with the presence of anthers without pollen grains and deposit of callose in ovule from ovaries that do not form fruit. Few species of the family and subfamily were studied regarding the development of anthers, pollen grains, ovules and megagametophyte,and all the already studied species are monoecious. Therefore our aim is to describe the development of anther, microsporogenesis, microgametogenesis, ovule development, megagametogenesis and megagametogenesis of three species of Rauvolfia (Rauvolfioideae - Apocynaceae) with different reproductive strategies: Rauvolfia sellowii has functional dioecy, R. vomitoria presents functional ginodioecy and R.wedelliana is monoecious. Consequently, we intend to identify the process that leads to pollen sterility and deposition of callose in ovules, as well as to establish a development pattern for the above mentioned structures of Rauvolfia.
