Abstract

Although several medications are available for treating social anxiety disorder (SAD) and music performance anxiety (MPA), the treatment of these disorders still faces many difficulties, not only related to adverses reactions, that may reduce treatment adherence, but also because many of these drugs do not produce therapeutic effects in a significant proportion of patients, producing a high incidence of non-remission. Thus, the study of new pharmacological tools for handling these disorders is necessary. In this context, the objective of the present project is to evaluate the effects of oxytocin and ayahuasca in anxiety. For this purpose, three experimental studies will be conducted, with the following specific objectives: a) compare the behavioral, subjective and cognitive (social cognition) effects of a single ayahuasca dose between patients with social anxiety and healthy volunteers; b) assess the effects of anxiety in singing voice and the acute effects of oxytocin in the performance and voice pattern of musicians during a music performance simulation test, and c) evaluate social cognition in musicians by means of a facial emotion recognition task and assess the acute effects of oxytocin in relation to the level of music performance anxiety. According to previous results of studies conducted by our research group, it is expected that the substances under investigation may produce an acute anxiolytic effect in SAD and MPA, filling the need of substances with such a pharmacological profile and with fewer side-effects, in the clinical and performance level (specially regarding voice).
