The Otto Karpfen's political-ideological journalism: an analysis of articles to Der Christliche Ständestaat and Die Erfüllung

Abstract

This research aims to make an interpretative analysis of articles published by journalist and literary critic austrian-brazilian Otto Karpfen (Otto Maria Carpeaux, 1900-1978) in the newspaper Der Christliche Ständestaat and magazine Die Erfüllung, both of Vienna, Austria. The object of the research consists of a set of 16 articles published by Otto Karpfen between 1934 and 1938 in these media. Such items will be analyzed from three aspects: a) the political and socio-cultural environment of Austria during the 1930s, marked by the rise of National Socialism of Hitler; b) the political and ideological significance of Otto Karpfen's journalistic work in the Austrian press, in view of their engagement in the struggle for independence of Austria against Germany and the Third Reich, from their affiliation to political Catholicism. c) the journalist's positions expressed in these articles about the role of the Austrian State in the context of the "New Austria" (Neue Österreich) and in relation to the Jewish question. Otto Karpfen's articles will be studied from a methodological procedure whose purpose is to reconstruct some elements of the socio-cultural life of the period and linking this historical and social context to the textual elements in articles for Der Christliche Ständestaat and Die Erfüllung. The expected results are the need to study the Otto Karpfen's european journalistic work, inserting it in the historic atmosphere of the time - the 1930s - the period in which he played an important activity as a political journalist in Austria.
