Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are the greatest death cause in Brazil and worldwide, mechanical circulatory support devices are a technology able to help in reducing in this death rate. The objective of this project is to present solutions, based on the integration of engineering and medicine, related to the development of mechanical circulatory support devices.The challenges which must be overcome to reach our objective include: application of advanced engineering methods for high performance device construction, as well as evaluation systems in a clinical, experimental and technological approaches.Methodology consists in 13 subprojects, which addresses applied engineering subjects, validation tests in animals and by numerical methods, clinical trials, project and optimization of new devices, surgical implantation procedure improvement, development of failure management systems and development of advanced electrical source systems.The general results from this project aims to tender technologies for the benefit of patients with severe cardiovascular diseases and go forward in applied engineering to medicine in international scope.
