Abstract

This project will consolidate a new field of study in our Institution: the zebrafish model for functional investigations of genes related to human neurological disorders by genetic reverse techniques and phenotypic assessment. We hope contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the seizures by applying high throughput techniques to investigate microRNAs profile after seizure-induced, functional study of candidate genes and phenotype assessment after genetic manipulation, by behavioral, electrographic and histological characterization. Zebrafish combines exceptional genetic manipulation conditions with easy phenotype visualization in a short period of time. There are remarkable benefits in using the zebrafish as an animal model, and it is important to consolidate it in our Institution in order to have this model available as a fundamental tool to answer our questions regarding to genetics of epilepsies, and improve our investigation strategies stepping up our research to be internationally competitive. This project integrates the efforts of the FAPESP/CEPID- BRAINN (#2013/07559-3, coordinated by Dr. Fernando Cendes) that objectives the understanding of the complex processes that underlie brain function and neurological disorders. Through this project, we hope developing human resource at different levels. (AU)
