Functionalization of silica nanoparticles: increasing biological interaction


The proposal described here aims to surface functionalization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (NSMs) in order to increase the biological effectiveness and reduce the cytotoxicity. The aim is to improve performance and compatibility of biomedical structures. Within this context, three different systems but with similar characteristics will be investigated: (1) NSMs with bactericidal properties; (2) NSMs with virucidal properties and (3) NSMs with properties to induce the death of tumor cells in a selective manner. Characterization of nanoparticles in every step of functionalization and release tests of different drugs (active agents) will be conducted. Bioassays with susceptible and resistant bacteria, different viruses and a variety of cells will be done. This proposal is an extension and an in deep sequence of the FAPESP proposal (2011/21954-7) that ended 07/31/2014. In addition, the line of research proposed in this application will contribute to the consolidation of the research group in the areas of synthesis, functionalization, and characterization of functionalized complex systems devoted to nanomedicine applications.
