FCLAr/UNESP open projects on Perseids platform and in the Sunoikisis program Europe, based in the Humboldt digital humanities chair at the University of Leipzig

Abstract

Monica Berti, researcher of The Humboldt Chair of Digital Humanities at U. of Leipzig, will work on two main fronts in the "Open Projects in Digital Humanities of FCLAr / UNESP on the Perseids platform and in the Sunoikisis Europe Program, based in the AvHumboldt Chair of Digital at the University of Leipzig. First, as the coordinator of Sunoikisis Europe program, based at the same university, in partnership with the traditional Sunoikisis of the Center of Hellenic Studies of Harvard in Washington. The G.P. in Linguistics and Portuguese Language of the Faculdade de Ciências e Letras of UNESP in Araraquara participates in this program, providing with G.P. in Literary Studies a discipline in the 1st term of 2015 announced as 'Working with digital texts based on web tools ", a special edition that will be part of Sunoikisis Europe program, focused on annotation, translation and research of digital corpus of Thucydides' texts. Sunoikisis Europe and the related course will attend universities in US, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Georgia, Greece, England and Italy. This discipline will occur through online seminars with all the participantes, and will have local sessions in each institution. The objective is to increase the linguistic and digital instrumentation, and improve the training of teachers and students to work in collaborative efforts of expanding open digital annotated corpora, and their translations of historical languages in modern languages, for research and teaching, directed towards the Open Philology Project, also based in Leipzig. That one, led by G. Crane (Leipzig U. and Tufts U., USA), is a project committed to electronic, machine readable and operable editions, under Creative Commons CCBYSA license, divided into three sub-projects: 1) Open and Greek Latin, that will make freely available to the public original Greek and Latin texts with classical Arabic and modern translations. Its goal is to have at least one version of each Greek and Latin work, from antiquity to 600 AD, scanned, OCR textualized, annotated morphologically and syntactically in TEI-XML standards, and indexed according to CTS / CITE architecture; 2) The Historical Language eLearning that will provide language learning to all, and 3) the Scaife Digital Library, that will integrate various textual and archaeological sources. Our interest in this collaborative project concerns the lack of translations of Greek works in Portuguese, as compared to other European languages, and virtually no open translations in Portuguese, linked electronically to the Greek and Latin annotated and machine-readable texts for research and teaching purposes. Ongoing projects in FCLAr / UNESP aim at promoting open translations in Portuguese and annotated Greek sources, to expand access to resources for education and research in the area, and encouraging more students and teachers in related fields to participate. The Sunoikisis coordinator's presence is intended to address details and specific questions of teaching procedures and student production during activities, in a closer contact with faculty, students, local participants and guests, in short-term but in an intensive and direct training of corpus annotation that will be the focus of the course. Second, the professor is also an expert in digital editing and annotating on Perseids platform in which all the available annotations of the corpus-source and the aligned translations will be built. She is editor-in-chief of the sub-project The Leipzig Open Fragmentary Texts Series, held on the same platform. Our projects that used the Alpheios platform until 2014 henceforth will use the Perseids platform. The collaboration of visiting researcher to local projects will also involve the detailed instructions of Perseids resources. (AU)
