Immunogenetic markers for gestational Diabetes mellitus

Abstract

It has been estimated that until 2030 more than 400 million people will develop diabetes. A variety of diabetes mellitus types has been described, including the type 1 multigenic (DM-1), of autoimmune origin or idiopathic, the monogenic, the gestational (GDM) and the type 2 (DM-2). The gestational diabetes mellitus is the most common disturb during pregnancy. The standard definition of GDM is the abnormal glucose metabolism diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy. Women with GDM history usually present postpartum diabetes, resistance to insulin, metabolic syndrome, hipertension and dislipidemy. The early detection of this metabolic condition may allow a previous intervention to prevent or even delay other types of diabetes. Some studies in women with GDM have pointed out the induction of genes involved in the immune response, particularly those associated with inflamation. In this context, our project aims to detect polymorphisms and haplotypes of the class I HLA genes (considering all segments - promotor, coding and 3'UTR) associated with susceptibility to GDM and to computationally evaluate the subjacent mechanisms to these associations. Also, this project aims to detect microRNAs diferentially expressed that might be markers for GDM, besides the construction of interaction nets of microRNAs and messenger RNAs of genes involved with GDM.
