The role of vitamin D on cardiometabolic and immuno-inflammatory profile of postmenopausal women

Abstract

Deficiency of vitamin D (VD) and the increase in the prevalence of obesity are considered important public health issues. Recent evidence suggests the involvement of the VD in several chronic diseases: obesity, hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and consequently the cardiovascular disease (CVD). The important role played by VD on bone mass is well defined, however extra-osseous effects of VD on cardiometabolic markers and immuno-inflammatory drugs are under current investigation. In recent years the associations between VD deficiency, inflammation and cardio-metabolic disease have been proposed. However the information on the association between VD and inflammatory markers in the general population is scarce. And there are few studies directed to postmenopausal women, an important risk group for CVD. If there is a relationship between serum values of VD and cardiometabolic and immuno-inflammatory profile, our hypothesis is that the isolated supplementation of VD could provide significant reduction in markers of cardiovascular risk. Clinical research is important to improve the quality of life of postmenopausal women and reduce health care costs. It is expected that with the study of association between isolated supplementation of vitamin D and indicators of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women can identify the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on cardiometabolic and immune-inflammatory profile of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women,affecting considerably the morbidity and the quality of life of patients followed at the Climacteric and Menopause Clinic of the Botucatu Medical School, UNESP.
