Impact of climate conditions on the sugarcane yield

Abstract

The global warming that has been occurring since 1950 is currently considered unequivocal and many of the observed changes are unprecedented. In this scenario, the fuels production derivative of biomass has become an alternative explored in order to mitigate this problem. In this sense, Brazil stands out as one of the world leaders in the development of technologies and use of ethanol fuel production. However, climate change scenarios indicate that in Brazil temperature increase and prolonging droughts will occur. Therefore, the maintenance of agricultural production and its expansion depends on management and public policies to allow the ongoing changes. Among the tools developed in recent decades to improve the calculation and monitoring of the drought, remote sensing has become a very promising. Several vegetation index, drought index, moisture index and surface temperature data extracted from satellite images have been used successfully for monitoring crops drought. Considering that, most of these indexes, from remote sensing data, have been developed for crops that do not include sugarcane. In this sense, this project aims to investigate if, by the indexes (or combination of them), is possible to check, quantify and/or estimate the occurrence and duration of drought events. In addition, quantify the losses caused by drought events in the sugarcane yield, in real time. (AU)
