Abstract

Dentofacial deformities (DFD) can be defined as defects in the growth and development of facial bones, mainly the upper and lower jaws. It may affect the function or development of other structures, organs and related systems. DFD can alter the dimensions and function of the pharyngeal airway space. Orthognathic surgery is the procedure of choice for the treatment of DFD, and subsequently the affects related systems as the pharingeal airway. Maxillary transversal deficiency is characterized by unilateral or bilateral posterior cross-bite, crammed and rotated teeth, narrow palate and its treatment is surgically assisted maxillary expansion for adult patients. This procedure affects not only bones, but also the teeth, nasal cavity, air space, lips and surrounding soft tissues. Objective: the aim of this study is evaluate, through a retrospective analysis of 3D cone beam computed tomographic images (CBCT), changes in pharyngeal airway space after orthognathic surgery and SARPE. Materials and Method: Pre and post-operative 3D volumetric measurements will be taken using CBCT and Dolphin Imaging 11.5 of 160 individuals with DFD who underwent orthognathic surgery and 28 individuals who underwent SARPE by different surgical techniques. In addition, we will measure the dental and skeletal effects of SARPE, such as the positioning of the nasal septum and the nasal walls. (AU)
