Visiting researcher: Douglas Biber

Abstract

Prof. Douglas Biber will collaborate in the following projects during his visit:a.Linguística de Corpus: Padronização e variação (Corpus Linguistics: Patterning and Variation)b.Dicionário de colocações do português brasileiro (A dictionary of Brazilian Portuguese collocations)c.Corpora and culture, in preparation, involving the following projects: a .Dimensões de variação em registros da televisão (Dimensions of variation across television registers); b. Usando a Análise Multidimensional no enfoque da variação no âmbito da tradução (Using Multi-Dimensional analysis to assess variation across source and translated texts); c. Observação de mudanças culturais em uma perspectiva sincrônica por meio da Análise Multidimensional (Looking at cultural shifts in English over time: An MD perspectived. Representatividade no desenho de corpus: Contribuições da Análise Multidimensional (Representativeness in corpus design: Contributions from Multidimensional Analysis). The individual projects are described in the corresponding document attached to this proposal. The following benefits are expected: 1. Improving methods employed in the research projects in which the visiting professor will collaborate. 2. Better understanding of the statistical techniques involved in the analyses of the corpora in each project. 3. Learning, by the national group, of new tools being devoloped by the visiting professor. 4. Development of an international temático project, as described in the document detailing the research projects involved in this proposal. 5. Creating ties between PUCSP and GSU. 6. Acquiring know-how on how to use new techniques for corpus analysis. 7. Enabling MA and PhD students to get to know the visiting professor. 8. Disseminating the field of Corpus Linguistics in the country. (AU)
