Development of safe and effective lipid nanoparticles containing chemical sunscreen and vegetable oils derived from biosustainable Brazilian flora


Skin cancer and photoaging are recognized by organizations and government agencies as the main evils resulting from exposure to the sun and, therefore, the use of sunscreens has been widely promoted as a means of risk reduction. Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) is a chemical filter found in most cosmetic formulations, but despite its benefits, there are reports of irritation, allergies and contact dermatitis resulting from the molecule undergoing photoactivation with sunlight. Given these problems, several studies have focused on the development of more effective methods for topical administration of OMC, with particular emphasis on reduction of systemic absorption. It is known that nanoencapsulation of OMC reduces its degradation and increases its half life, allowing a reduced frequency of application and thereby decreasing primary dermal irritation. Another factor that may contribute to the reduction of side effects from topical OMC is its association with vegetable oils. A blend of Wheat Germ Oil (Triticum sativum Lank) as an antioxidant, and an oily extract of annatto (Bixa orellana L.), which protects the skin against ultraviolet rays from sunlight, is suggested for this purpose. Thus, it is proposed in this project to conduct studies for the development of colloidal carriers of solid lipid basis, associated with vegetable oils that may open new frontier for the delivery of bioactive agents in a sustainable manner.
