Morphogenesis of the das Cinzas Watershed (PR): landforms, sedimentation and Neotectonics study

Abstract

The relationship between the relief evolution, sedimentation and tectonic activity, either in active margin or in intraplate area, is growing in importance among researchers specialized in studies of the Cenozoic. With respect to the das Cinzas watershed, such integrated studies considering the relationship between morphogenesis, sedimentation and neotectonic are nonexistent. Thus, this project proposes investigate the morphogenesis of the das Cinzas catchment, from the multidisciplinary integrated study of landforms, sedimentation, ancient weathering processes and neotectonics. For this purpose, will be used geological, geomorphological and pedological methods and techniques, with emphasis on landforms, cenozoic sedimentary deposits, paleosols/buried soils and neotectonic features, including C14 dating and LOE techniques. This research intent obtain a data set and results that will bring the possibility of identifying the main morphogenetic processes in the area and enhance the understanding of their cenozoic sedimentation and neotectonics relationship. Moreover, the dating will provide information about the chronological deposition ordering in the area in the last thousand years. Another objective is provide data to help clarify whether the alluvial terraces and meandering processes in the area are from climatic fluctuations, or if there is a neotectonic activity influence. This data integration will permit getting a dated events systematization to contribute to the Quaternary chronology in the South American continent as well as in the intraplate neotectonic context.
