Identification of molecular markers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis using DNA microarrays


The present project is an extension of the CAGE project - Cooperation for Analysis of Gene Expression - and it proposes to advance in the characterization of prognostic markers in cancer through the association with clinical groups which have access to a large number of well-supervised patients, for whom the clinical evolution is known. An important advance is related to the fact that the clinical groups currently involved, from the Sírio Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, and from the Unicamp Hemocenter in Campinas, have proven experience in the study of different sub-types of prostate and kidney cancers, leukemias and lymphomas. These groups now have a tumor bank with hundreds of samples of fresh tissue preserved by freezing, a much higher number of patients than that found up to the present time in the literature that used DNA microarray technology in the study of cancer. In addition to this, these groups hold the clinical and pathological information from supervised patients which goes back as far as 5 years ago, and which is of recognized prognostic value. (AU)
