Non-invasive brain stimulation in treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders: focus in major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder

Abstract

Dr. Mantovani will serve as Co-Investigator in our research studies testing the clinical and neurobiological effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in Major Depressive Disorder (Young Investigator FAPESP grant 2012/20911-5) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (ongoing research project at the Institute of Psychiatry). Moreover, Dr. Mantovani will teach graduate and post-graduate students seminars about the application of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in neuropsychiatry disorders. Dr. Mantovani is an internationally recognized expert in the young and emerging field of noninvasive brain stimulation, his expertise is in the application of image guided brain stimulation in the study of the pathophysiology and treatment of refractory mood and anxiety disorders. Not only is this work important for its potential clinical role, but also from its ability to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying conditions such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Dr.Mantovani's MD, with a specialization in psychiatry and PhD training in neurophysiology and neurostimulation are ideal to consolidate our translational neuroscience program at the University of Sao Paulo.
