A search and development of new methods for functionalization of alkanes which are the main constituents of petroleum and natural gas, catalysed by metal complexes is the one of the main topic of research at the beginning of 21th century. Selective and efficient oxidative functionalization of aliphatic C-H bonds is one of very important goals of chemistry. However a practical realization of this task meets serious difficulties, especially for the case of saturated hydrocarbons due to extremely high inertness of alkanes. Alkanes do not usually react with "normal" reagents that easily oxidize much more reactive olefins, alcohols, amines etc. Usual for organic synthesis solvents, such as alcohols or ketones are often not appropriate for reactions with saturated hydrocarbons since a solvent and not a substrate is oxidized in this case. Moreover, alkanes are oxygenated to give products which are more reactive than starting substrates and, naturally, if an excess of an oxidant is used, substantial over-oxidation to undesirable compounds will take place. Fortunately, during the last decades new systems based on metal complexes have been discovered which allow us to oxidize saturated hydrocarbons under relatively mild conditions and these reactions are relatively efficient. Our research group has a long collaboration with Russian researchers from Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics and from A. N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds, to which Dr. M. Mikhail Vinogradov, the visiting researcher is linked. The researcher will collaborate with laboratory results to the project CAPES A017_2013 (Green catalysis in the oxidation of natural products - production of renewable raw materials for the chemical industry), linked to this proposal. Dr. Vinogradov would spend three months at UFABC working directly in the laboratory of research on the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of new organometallic complexes based on V, Cu, Os, Fe, Mn and others in the oxidation of hydrocarbons. Additionally, the researcher will give a lecture entitled "Modern organometallic and inorganic catalysis", that will be publicize in the Brazilian Network of Catalysis so that other researchers of the State of São Paulo and Brazil may be present. He will also attend regular group meetings where they would discuss the results of other projects developed in our laboratories at UFABC. His visit to UFABC would be of great importance to promote collaborations with researchers from the University. Dr. Vinogradov will still participate as referee in master's and PhD´s thesis and in the Postgraduate Course in Science and Technology/Chemistry from UFABC. (AU)
