Physical capacity, peripheral muscle function, inflammation and quality of life in children and adolescents with asthma before and after pulmonary rehabilitation program

Abstract

Asthma is a leading chronic diseases of childhood , that leads to airway inflammation . Associated with this inflation is airway hyperresponsiveness that leads to recurrent episodes of wheezing , shortness of breath , and coughing , particularly at night or early morning . The chronicity of this disease causes increased susceptibility to reduced exercise tolerance due to pulmonary limitation. Changes in functional capacity, Inflammation and peripheral muscle strength has not been adequately addressed in children with asthma . Objective: To evaluate the physical capacity , peripheral muscle function , and inflammatory markers in asthmatic children and adolescents and observe these variables after pulmonary rehabilitation schedule . This project consists of two phases : Phase I : cross-sectional study comparing the variables of the asthma group with a control group matched for age and gender , and Phase II will consist of a randomized clinical trial will be performed to determine the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in asthmatic volunteers . The following assessments will be made in Phase I for the asthma and control groups : quality of life ( PAQLQ ) questionnaire , physical capacity ( cardiopulmonary exercise test , shuttle test, level of physical activity ) , autonomic cardiovascular regulation ( HR variability ) , peripheral muscle strength (MR , maximal voluntary contraction , EMG ), inflammation ( TNF- alpha, IL- 4, IL -5, IL -10, IL -13 , PCR). In phase II , volunteers will be randomized into asthma group and conventional rehabilitation group. Rehabilitation group will aerobic exercise , and conventional group will do breathing exercises . 2 weekly sessions 6minutos be made , for 8 weeks . At the end , the same evaluation of phase I will be made to compare the groups . Expected Outcomes : It is expected to determine the differences in cardiopulmonary capacity , peripheral muscle and inflammatory asthmatic children and adolescents and to identify the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation in this population , such as improvement in functional capacity , muscle strength and altered inflammatory pattern . So , have greater support in identifying the benefits of physical exercise in asthma . (AU)
