Production of ethanol from bagasse sugarcane pretreated with ozone: study of inhibitors, fermentation and industrial yeasts

This project fits in with the theme of biofuels to contribute with knowledge that support concrete progress in strengthening the renewable energy sources. Hydrolysis of abundant plant biomass in Brazil, such as bagasse and straw of cane sugar, have been widely investigated envisioning their use in biochemical fermentative route. The aim of this project is to evaluate integrally the process of production of second generation ethanol, starting with the bagasse until obtain ethanol. To achieve this goal, the following steps will be performed: (1) pretreatment of bagasse using ozone for delignification and increased permeability in the cellulosic fiber, (2) enzymatic saccharification of biomass using commercial enzymatic formulations and / or own production, (3 ) fermentation using different industrial yeast strains Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Cat1, Pedra2, JP1). With the execution of the fermentative steps, it will be possible to close the circle of the process to the final product and, thus, to obtain information in an integrated way of the three important steps required for the production of second generation ethanol.
