Abstract

Saliva is a fluid produced and secreted from salivary glands whose importance in homeostasis of the individual is well known. Several diseases leads to reduction in the salivary flow or xerostomia, among them diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure (CRF). In these systemic diseases we observed increase in the oxidative stress. Diabetes is a disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. In previous studies we demonstrated changes in the antioxidant system, increase of oxidative damage and alterations in the energetic potencial in salivary glands of diabetic rats. CRF is also a disease that affects great part of the world population where the increase of oxidative damage is present. Several studies demonstrated salivary alterations in patients with CRF, but few are those using the gland as a source of information. Antioxidant therapy with vitamins C and E reduces the oxidative stress presented in these diseases. The objectives of this study are: 1) analyze the presence of oxidative damages in rats with the model ablation of 5/6 renal mass 12 weeks after the surgery, as well changes in the energetic potential in submandibular (SM) and parotid (PA). 2) Verify possible benefits of the use of Vitamins C and E supplementations in the prevention of oxidative damages in diabetes and CRF.
