Abstract

Hypertension is a major public health problem in Brazil, the prevalence in the adult population is approximately 25-40%. Some hypertensive patients seem to be resistant to the combination of antihypertensive drugs, which generates referrals to specialists, triggering investigations costly to the health system. Numerous studies have estimated that only 50% of patients adhere to treatment of chronic diseases . Establishing a diagnosis of resistant hypertension before the investigation of medication adherence may have important clinical and financial implications. There are different methods to assess adherence to therapy, however, each has its advantages and disadvantages, these are related to the ease of application and reproducibility, cost and accuracy. The main objective of the study is to compare direct and indirect methods for assessing adherence to medication for resistant hypertension. The secondary objectives are to estimate the prevalence of "true resistant hypertension" versus "pseudo - resistance" for noncompliance and compare medication adherence in patients with "resistant hypertension controlled" versus "uncontrolled resistant hypertension".
