Genetics studies in natural populations of macaw viewing management and conservation in legal reserves of rural settlements at Pontal do Paranapanema

Abstract

Macaw (Acrocomia aculeata) is a native arborean palm with wide geographic distribution. This palm has great potential for use in extraction of vegetable oil used in biodiesel production. At Pontal do Paranapanema, in the extreme west of São Paulo State, there are large natural populations of this palm, especially in Legal Reserves of rural settlements of agrarian reform. In order to make a sustainable use of these resources, there must be a planned companion planting with native trees and other useful species as an agroforestry system with settlement communities. Thereby this use could help small farmers, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region as an area of critical state. In this context there is the importance of evaluating genetic variations within and between natural populations and the crossing rate of macaw species, aiming the potential for immediate use in management plans, SAF plantations and conservations projects in the Pontal do Paranapanema region. Unfortunately, despite the great species economic potential it is poorly studied and the natural populations need basic genetic and ecological information, especially for the Pontal do Paranapanema region, where this project will be implanted. The study will establish a sample of 50 adult individuals in each of three places of the rural settlements that will be genetically analyzed, representing the region (150 samples). To compare, 50 individuals of Dourado- SP, that was genetically studied will serve as reference. To study the crossing rate, in one of the populations, 25 seeds will be sampled in array of 10 matrices. The total amount is 450 samples in the study. (AU)
