The time correlated single photon couting (TCSPC) technique is the most sensitive method for determining photoluminescence/fluorescence lifetimes. TCSPC is based on the detection of single photons after optical excitation of a sample by a pulsed source. The light from the source starts the electronics, which is stopped after the photons from the samples reaches the detector. The time difference between these two signal is analyzed in a histogram, and the lifetime from the electronic carriers decay can be directly determined. This project aims to setup a TCSPC system with a 100 ps resolution. The technique will be composed by a pulsed laser, a spectrometer, an infrared photomultiplier detector, a timing electronics and dedicated software. The whole system will be aligned in a such way that photoluminescence/fluorescence measurements as a function of the temperature (10K - 300K) or magnetic field can be done easily without any special efforts. Due to the flexibility of the system, high resolution in time, high sensitive photons detection (one photon at a time) and easily configurable, other detectors and lasers sensitive in different spectral regions can be integrate. Therefore, this TCSPC technique will be a very powerful and unique tool for the whole scientific community working on optical properties of materials. (AU)
