Abstract

Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) has been studied as a repair material in endodontics. CAC shows advantages in the physical and mechanical properties, bioactivity when exposed to simulated body fluid solution, and as a barrier against physical and chemical microleakage. Furthermore, through developing the project "Systematic physico-chemical study on cement material for its application as biomaterial," it was possible to determine the influence of additives on its hydration reaction, pH in biological fluid solution, workability/setting time, bioactivity, injectability, and radiopacity. The present study aims to produce biomaterial based on CAC to meet the recommendations of the report of the Prospective Study in Advanced Materials for Applications in Medical-Dental Health to develop cements with potential applications for replacing the glass ionomer cement and materials to be used in the production of scaffolds for tissue engineering. In Brazil, ionomers are imported and only packaged in the country. Furthermore, the engineering of tissue for cartilage and bone depends on a biomaterial that serves as a scaffold for cell culturing and development of new tissue. In this area, compatibility between the mechanical and biological properties has not yet been fully achieved. Thus, some compounds will be incorporated into the CAC to increase the mechanical strength and biocompatibility with biological systems for application in medical/dental health. (AU)
