Abstract

Bacteria belonging to the genus Pseudomonas have a great metabolic versatility, a wide capacity to adapt, can inhabit in various environments and acquire resistance to a considerable variety of antimicrobials. One of the mechanisms of acquired resistance to the carbapenems meropenem and imipenem, in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is by the production of the enzime metallo-²-lactamase (MBL) and the resistance to the monobactam aztreonam is mainly caused by altering the permeability of the drug through changes in the bacteria outer membrane and by a system of ejection through efflux pump of the type MexAB-OprM.This research project aims to study the profile and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance to some ²-lactamics of the carbapenems (imipenem and meropenem) and monobactams (aztreonam) classes in P. aeruginosa isolated from soil of the five Brazilian regions.
