Spatial and temporal dynamics of Huanglongbing (HLB) and its vector Diaphorina citri in commercial citrus orchards: tools for disease management and sampling methods


Huanglongbing (HLB, Greening) is one of the most important citrus disease worldwide. Its first detection in Brazilian conditions occurred in 2004 and, so far, more than 50% of the citrus orchards in São Paulo state are affected by HLB. There are no curative methods for this disease, and only new infections prevention can be adopted to minimize the related damages. New infections can be avoided by the detection and elimination of HLB-symptomatic plants and reducing the HLB-insect vector population (the Hemiptera Diaphorina citri). The maintenance of HLB-affected plants and adults of D. citri carrying its pathogen put under potential risk areas where the prevention of new infections is adopted. The distance and degree of influence of no HLB-managed orchards to managed orchards will be determined in the present project. Citrus adjacent orchards, with and without HLB management, will be evaluated during three years on the number and spatial position of HLB-symptomatic plants and D. citri individuals. The expected results will be used to compare the regional and localized HLB-management strategies used to reduce the disease incidence over time. The results will be used also to develop sampling protocols to detect HLB-affected plants and D. citri. Stochastic modeling, spatial and temporal analysis, index of aggregation, spatial correlation, multivariate statistical methods, and survival analysis will be applied to analyze a data set obtained from citrus commercial orchards maintained with and without HLB management (and vector control) in São Paulo state, Brazil.
