Abstract

This research project comprehends seven modules. Its joint analysis will allow a better understanding of the structure and behavior of diseases caused by begomovirus and crinivirus in Sotanaceae in Brazil, a sine qua non condition for the design of a more rational system of integrated management. The modules have the following titles and objectives: (1) Molecular biology - detection and characterization of begomovirus and crinivirus in Solanaceae plants in important Brazilian production areas; (2) Virus-vector-plant relationships - determination of virus acquisition, inoculation and retention periods and effects of viruses on vector biological parameters; (3) Spatial and temporal epidemiology - to understand the structure and behavior of epidemics of diseases vectored by Bemisia tabaci; (4) Inoculum sources: primary and secondary - to quantify the relative importance of primary and secondary infections and the role of secondary hosts in the epidemiology of B. tabaci vectored diseases; (5) Damage - to quantify damage caused by begomovirus and crinivirus in Brazilian conditions; (6) Vector - to monitor the populational dynamics of B. tabaci in field conditions and to quantify its influence in disease incidence; (7) Management - to determine the effect of insecticides in the transmission of begomovirus and crinivirus and to evaluate germoplasm collection in relation to resistance to the diseases and vector. The general objective of this project is to rationally control the diseases caused by begomovirus and crinivirus through combined tactics, under the conceptual basis of integrated management of pests and diseases.
