Abstract

The Brazil-USA collaboration provides an exciting opportunity to explore different molecular, cellular, and physiological aspects of muscle wasting. OSU has expertise in cancer cachexia, especially dissecting the mechanisms by which NF-kB regulates muscle differentiation using different in vitro and in vivo experimental models for functional studies, which can complement the UNESP expertise in cardiac cachexia, microRNAs, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics analyses which together, will allow us to ultimately impact on cancer cachexia. The objective of this Brazil-USA research collaboration is to improve cancer cachexia research in both countries. This will be achieved by effective knowledge exchange and research collaboration between the groups from both countries. Additional short-term metrics of success will include collaborative research grants, training awards, and publication of co-authored papers. The long-term goal is to not only to better dissect the function and mechanisms by which genes regulates muscle wasting in cancer cachexia, but to also translate this information to identify new drug targets to support the development of new therapeutic strategies.
