Reform and readjustment to the research laboratories and facilities of Brazilian Biosciences national laboratory (LNBio)

Abstract

The Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio), located at the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), has a total building area of 3472.60 square meters and houses eleven Laboratory Facilities which can be used by researchers from public or private institutions and companies. This project aims to carry out a reform and readjustment to the Research Laboratories and Facilities of LNBio in order to accommodate the growing number of researchers and developers of scientific research, as well as allowing a better accommodation to the Open Facilities destinated to the external users from academia or industry sectors. The project will be implemented in two steps. The first step will involve the renovation of part of the administration building of the CNPEM for the expansion of LNBio, constituting a new area that will allow the installation of benches and equipment shared by scientific research groups in a common environment. This new area will add 439 square meters to LNBio, which will accomadate more than 100 collaborators. To do so, the project will require replacement of the floor and walls, hydraulics, electricals system and painting, followed by a resizing of the air conditioning system of the building. A cold room will be built for the storage of materials in the new area, a dark room suitable for recording photographic experiments of molecular biology will also be built, with the installation of a light proof revolving door.Once the first step is completed, it will be occupied by the scientific research groups. This will allow the realization of the second step of the project, which will consist of upgrading the laboratories and the LNBio Facilities. In addition, the upgrading of the space occupied by the Facilities will enable a rational planning of future expansions. The requested resource from FAPESP [...] is intended primarily to carry out the first step of the project of reform and upgrading of the laboratories, which its completion is expected to end in February 2014.
