Loricariidae from the Crystalline Brazilian Shield, with emphasis in the Hypoptopomatinae and Neoplecostominae subfamilies

Loricariidae is the largest family of the order Siluriformes in the world. The subfamilies Hypoptopomatinae and Neoplecostominae have been the subject of various studies, but problems still remain concerning their definitions and compositions in consequence of conflicts resulted from recent molecular and morphological hypotheses. Besides, their largest diversity occurs in the drainages of the Brazilian Crystalline Shield, which still remains not adequately known. Inventories in these drainages are consequently fundamental to uncover the diversity of the group, collect and describe the new taxa and also to make material available for other studies, e.g. revisional and phylogenetic. In this project we aim to collect in the drainages of the Crystalline Shield, including Paraná, São Francisco, Tocantins and coastal rivers; enlarge the DZSJRP fish collection, incorporating new specimens and tissue samples; describe the new taxa; develop taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analyzes; train people in curation of biological collections. Six to eight field trip, with a team of three or four members, will explore intensively stream habitats. All the specimens captured will be incorporated to the DZSJRP fish collection. Hypoptopomatinae and Neoplecostominae specimens will be analyzed, named, described (new taxa) and incorporated to the projects of the Ichthyology lab. (AU)
