Coverage rate, accessibility and results of surgical treatment in a region of Sao Paulo State

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the coverage rate of cataract surgery, the barriers, as well as the outcome of cataract after surgery performed in a region of the State of São Paulo. This is a prospective, cross-sectional study of intentional sample. Patients with cataract, as well as bearers of aphakia or pseudophakia, residents in municipalities of central-western region of the State of São Paulo will be elected for participation. The coverage rate for cataract surgery, the barriers for not carrying out of surgery, as well as the visual acuity obtained with the surgeries performed will be evaluated. The sample consists of 600 individuals monthly examined, for 20 months, during two years. A subsample of cataract, aphakia or pseudophakia carriers have be considered. The population must be addressed by a Mobile Unit for ophthalmic care. A questionnaire and a complete ophthalmologic exam have to be done. The data will be subbmmited to statistical treatment using SPSS package, descriptive statistics and univariate and multivariate analysis. (AU)
