Labor union and layoffs: metalworkers from Campinas and region, from 1990 to 2002

The objective of the book is to analyze the actions and representations of the Metal Unions of Campinas and Region in face of layoffs occurring at its base from 1990 to 2002, which led to the reduction of 30 thousand jobs. The period analyzed was marked by productive restructuring in the sector and by the implementation of neo-liberal policies. The main theoretical discussion that guided the study was the analysis of trade union practice limits in face of unemployment. To discuss this issue, it was articulated elements of the correlation of political, economic and ideological forces with the critical analysis of trade union structure in Brazil. However, it has not been left aside aspects of tradition of organization and struggle of Brazilian trade unionism, as well as specific elements of the entity, which place limits on a practice beyond corporatism, understood as the action restricted to socio-professional group.
