Characterization of the lymphocyte profile in induced experimental periodontitis

Abstract

Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory conditions that, in the beginning affects the gingival tissue and can lead, over time to loss of tissue that supports the teeth. This disease has multi factorial etiology. The bacterial species complex interacts with the host tissue leading to the release of inflammatory cytokines, lysosomal enzymes, chemokines, other mediators and differentiated cell activation. The destroyed periodontal structures may include the teeth supporting tissue, the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament. Besides the aesthetic issue that, by itself, can bring consequences to self-esteem of individuals, associations were found and epidemiological evidence that periodontal infections also have systemic consequences, especially cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, prematurity, low birth weight, fetal growth restriction and glycemic control difficulties in diabetes. Can be understood that there is a great diversity in the development of periodontitis and this fact is associated with the aggravation of other diseases. To investigate the pattern of periodontitis and the correlated development of the immune response, in patients, is quite complicated, since they vary in pathology course. Therefore, this study will be used to submit rats induced periodontitis and evaluated the profile of lymphocytes found in biopsies by cell counters and immunophenotypic characteristics using immunological markers.
