Study of the low-latitude upper atmosphere in Brazil


This project is aimed at studying the dynamics and photochemistry of the upper atmosphere, mainly in the 70 to 120 km height region. Studies will include global change in the Earth's upper atmosphere; planetary waves; internal gravity waves; atmospheric tides; sporadic sodium layers and the climatology of the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Experimental work will include lidar studies of the stratospheric back-scatter profile, with a view to monitoring stratospheric aerosols, lidar back-scatter measurements in the stratosphere and mesosphere, aimed at measuring the temperature profile, atmospheric sodium measurements designed to study the chemistry, dynamics and climatology of the 80 to 110 km region, including the study of long-term change at these heights; meteor radar measurements in Cachoeira Paulista (in the state of São Paulo) and São João do Cariri (in the state of Paraíba), measuring winds between 80 and 105 km with a view to studying atmospheric tides and gravity waves; airglow measurements of hydroxyl, atomic and molecular oxygen emissions in Cachoeira Paulista and São João do Cariri, aimed at studying the photochemistry, dynamics and temperature structure of the mesopause region; imaging measurements of airglow at Cachoeira Paulista and São João do Cariri, with the aim of studying wave propagation in the mesopause region and plasma irregularities in the ionospheric F-region. To carry out these studies it will be necessary to acquire a meteor radar and an imager, to be installed in São João do Cariri, and a high performance dye laser to used together with the existing laser radar in São José dos Campos.
