Ecotoxicology assessment of effluents from aquaculture ponds

Abstract

A few years ago, the only concern about water quality for acquaculture was related to the assessment of pond supplies water quality . Nowadays, environment protection agencies have focused their interest on the impact that can be caused by the effluent from acquaculture ponds. The Brazilian National Environment Council has included ecotoxicology tests as a rule for water quality assessments (CONAMA statement n. 375, 2005). Therefore, the present proposal has the main objective of carrying out ecotoxicology assays with water samples from continental acquaculture facilities, with the aim of evaluating their environment impact, as well as to study the organic pollutant content of aquaculture waste, in order to suggest some technical supports for effluent management propositions. The ecotoxicology assays will be carried out with the standardized methodology (ABNT, 2005) proposed to Ceriodaphnia dubia which is suitable for acute and chronic toxicity interpretations, at the same time. Water samples will be collected from three continental acquaculture enterprises that are very representative of the general aspects of the activity (fish, prawn, and frog culture). Sites for collecting samples will be organized as follows: 1) water supply (inlet system); 2) inside culture pond; 3) effluent (outlet system); 4) Mix (junction of effluent with receptive water body); 5) upstream of site 5; 6) downstream of site 5. The results of this study will be confronted with the Brazilian National Environment Council statements (CONAMA, 2005), and may be useful for recommendations for acquaculture producers in order to establish management techniques for sustainable acquaculture practicing.
