Communitary-acquired-pneumonia in adults from a general hospital: clinical, nutricional and microbiological investigation

Abstract

Infectious respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia and influenza, are important causes of hospitalization and death in Brazil. The object of this investigation is to study poor case evolution predictors of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adult inpatients of the State Hospital in Sumaré over a one year period. Cases are considered incidences of CAP (predefined criteria), which evolve to death or hospitalization of 15 days or more. Controls are cases of CAP admitted to the same hospital which survive and are discharged in the first 15 days. Sample size was calculated to detect a 2.0 Odds Ratio, considering a 5% alpha error, an 80% testing power (1-b), and a 20% exposure factor frequency. Considering a 10% information loss, the number of individuals needed for the study was estimated as 231. Clinical evolution will be evaluated with nutritional, microbiological, clinical, and laboratory variables. This study will show the nutritional profile of adult pneumonia inpatients and identify the most common bacteria associated with infection. The microbiological profile of CAPs could assist clinical decisions and therapies for patients in the region. The objective is to identify clinico-nutritional predictors of poor case evolution for pneumonia in the region and to compare data with literature. (AU)
