Abstract

The Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) intends to be a world-class center which is also committed to knowledge diffusion and technology transfer. Hosted at CEBRAP and composed by associated university departments, the center is composed by a multi-disciplinary group - demographers, political scientists, sociologists, geographers, and anthropologists -, whose research agenda aims at studying contemporary Brazil to better understand the complex role of public policies and institutions on economic growth, poverty alleviation, and inequality reduction. The research plan also intends to map alternative forms of governance and their connections to the State to understand "who governs what?" By studying the factors behind Brazilian recent trajectory, both theoretical contributions and knowledge that can be useful for policy makers are expected to be obtained. Long-term comprehensive research performed at national scale, a multidisciplinary approach, and collaboration with leading research teams are core strategies of this proposal. A plan aimed at making research results known by society, high school students, and policy-makers through innovative medias is also presented. To provide technical assistance, geo-processing tools, and free data to policy-makers and policy analysts is at the core of the technology transfer plan here presented. (AU)
