Pineapple byproduct in feed restriction program for heavy swine

Abstract

This work aims to evaluate the inclusion of pineapple byproduct in the feeding of heavy swine in two experiments. In the first trial, the digestibility of dry and organic matter, protein, total, soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, phosphorous and calcium of the pineapple byproduct will be performed, using 28 finishing pigs fed diets with growing levels (10, 20 and 30%) of the byproduct. The partial feces collection method will be employed, using acid insoluble ash as an index compound. In the second trial, 32 finishing barrows will be allotted to one of four diets with growing levels (9, 18 and 27%) of the pineapple byproduct. Performance (daily weight gain, daily feed intake and feed conversion), carcass characteristics, diet rate of passage, diet nutrient digestibility and feed costs related with weight gain will be evaluated. In both trials a complete randomized block design, with seven repetitions in the first trial and eight in the second, will be adopted, and each animal will be considered an experiment unit. Results will be submitted to analysis of variance, using the GLM procedure of SAS, and to regression analysis. (AU)
