Tooth extraction in patients with coronary artery disease in dual antiplatelet therapy: a prospective randomized study

Abstract

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and clopidogrel have been used in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events, however, many professionals realize the suspension of therapy in dental surgical procedures in order to reduce the risk of bleeding, but it may provide thromboembolic events. Faced with this dilemma and the lack of clinical scientific research in dental surgical management of this group of patients, we propose to conduct a clinical trial in patients with coronary artery disease on dual antiplatelet therapy (aspirin + clopidogrel) undergoing dental extraction, in order to evaluate quantitatively the trans-operative bleeding in tooth extraction. The study group will consist of 30 patients on dual antiplatelet therapy, and the control group of 30 patients with heart disease, but no changes in hemostasis. Complete blood count, Ivy bleeding time, and platelet aggregation will be obtained prior to dental extractions. (AU)
