Evaluation of metabolic response associated with mastectomy in bitches with mammary neoplasms

Abstract

Mammary tumors represent 50% of all cancers that affect the female dog. Surgery is considered the treatment of choice, however there are still controversies about the benefits of the institution of radical surgical techniques instead the conservative techniques in treatment of mammary tumors. Total unilateral mastectomy guarantees the removal of all breast tissue affected by neoplasia, minimizing the chances of occurrence of new tumors, however, this technique induces excessive surgical trauma, increasing the morbidity of patients. Metabolic response to trauma is the name given to the set of neuroendocrine, hematological and immune occurring after surgical injury. Given the lack of studies related to assessment of metabolic response associated to mastectomy techniques in animals, this study aims to measure the blood glucose, plasma fibrinogen and serum cortisol, interleukin-2, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha levels, in postoperative period of bitches with mammary neoplasms undergoing total unilateral mastectomy or regional mastectomy, associated or not with ovariosalpingohisterectomy. To check the difference between the parameters evaluated at different moments within each group will be used ANOVA and T test for analysis between groups. The results allow a better understanding of the metabolic changes secondary to surgical trauma induced in surgical mastectomy in bitches. In this way, contribute to the establishment of therapeutic strategies that minimize the morbidity and mortality of patients in the perioperative period. (AU)
